Fingerprint authentication isn't just for security anymore. AuthenTec makes fingerprint sensors for enterprise computers, and their main clients have until recently been the military or any company that really needs to keep its laptops secure.
In my last post about Authentec, I swooned about how they go the extra mile to protect you from finger-truncating impersonators and eyeball-gouging identity thieves. (The company doesn’t simply use a picture of the top layer of the skin; it uses radio frequencies to measure the valleys and ridges of the fingerprint beneath the outer layer of skin, or within the live layer.)

"The Blood and Guts of Biometric Systems"
When biometric security devices began appearing nearly a decade ago, they were often touted as the final word in security technology. After all, stealing your password is one thing -- stealing a thumb, a retina or a voice print is a bit more of a chore.
Hackers, however, developed techniques to fool biometrics scanners, much like they've found ways around spam filters and firewalls. Biometric device vendors, in turn, learned how to improve early scanners and algorithms to develop more ironclad security products.

Global PC vendor Acer made its first move into the smartphone market at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month and I had a chance to sit down and try out a few of the new devices in Taipei.

"Jewel discontinues 'pay by touch'"
Purchases in Japan are frequently made by scanning a fingerprint with a cell phone. The risk of the system does include identity theft but "commercial biometrics is inevitable," industry trend forecaster Paul Saffo told the Tribune. "Whenever Americans face a choice between privacy and convenience, they always choose convenience," Saffo said. Newer, silicon-based scanners, which can eliminate the need to remember passwords, "cost $3 or $4," said Brent Dietz, a spokesman for Florida's AuthenTec, the world's leading maker of fingerprint sensors.

"Payment by fingerprint disappears"
Decentralized biometric systems that enable customers to keep their fingerprint information in their own cell phone or personal computer are inherently safer than centralized systems, Saffo said, though nothing is absolutely safe. There are an estimated 17 million laptop computers with fingerprint readers built in and 8 million cell phones, said Brent Dietz, a spokesman for AuthenTec, a Florida -based firm that is the world's leading provider of fingerprint sensors. Most of the cell phones are operating in Japan and some other Asian countries.
